Work: What If…
Do you have days when you go work and feel like the author of Ecclesiastes?
17 So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. 18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. – Ecclesiastes 2:17-18
Is work a drudgery? You can’t stand it? You have trouble seeing beyond anything than the need to make money in order to keep living?
What if you were able to see your job likes God sees your job? How would it be different? Would each day have more purpose or less? Would each project be an opportunity to grow and learn or be just one more thing you have to do? Would a potential deal be an opportunity to meet new people and encourage them in life or just more coin in the pocket?
How would viewing you job from God’s perspective transform your life?
The author of Ecclesiastes gives us a clue:
24 A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 26 To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. – Ecclesiastes 2:24-26
What he is saying is that when you are connected to God and look at your job like God does, then you can find satisfaction, enjoyment, and fulfillment in your job and in your life. If you are separated from God, your job, your work life, everything you may accomplish in this world eventually is meaningless- because it simply goes to someone else.
On Labor Day weekend we will study how to look at your work differently.
